Making Aliyah?

Aliyah has its own paperwork,
its own timeline, its own weight.

The Jewish Agency, Sal Klita, Misrad Haklita, customs exemptions — Aliyah involves layers that other relocations don't. Daniel knows every step. He'll map your specific Aliyah pathway, connect you with the right immigration lawyer, and make sure nothing is missed before you land.

Your customs exemptions,
clearly explained.

As a new Oleh, you are entitled to significant customs benefits that most people don't fully use. Here's exactly what you get — and how to make the most of it.

Household goods
0% customs
Up to 3 shipments within 3 years of Aliyah. Furniture, appliances, electronics, clothing, books — all exempt from import tax.
Vehicle
Reduced tax
Significant tax reduction when purchasing or importing a vehicle within 3 years. Must be used personally for minimum 4 years.
Business equipment
0% customs
Professional tools and machinery for your business can be imported duty-free within 3 years of Aliyah approval.
✓  What is included
Furniture & all household items
One of each appliance (fridge, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, oven etc.)
Up to 3 computers & 3 televisions per family
Up to 5 mobile phones per family
Clothing, linens, books, pictures, decorations
Air conditioning units relative to number of rooms
Carpets for up to 25% of home floor area
Can ship from any country, not just origin country
✗  What is NOT included
Alcohol & tobacco products
Cannabis or cannabis-based products (under any circumstances)
More than 6 months of medication (requires prescription)
More than 5 mobile phones without Ministry of Communications approval
Items intended for resale or commercial use
Items not used personally in Israel for minimum 6 years
Important
Your customs file is opened automatically within 3 days of Aliyah. If using UPS / FedEx / DHL, do NOT let them pay customs on your behalf — you will lose your exemption and cannot get a refund.
Eligibility windows — use them before they expire
Day 1
From Aliyah date
Customs file opens automatically. Clothing & footwear by post — up to 3 months after entry.
3 years
Household goods
Up to 3 shipments of household goods, duty free. Time your moves carefully — don't waste shipments.
3 years
Vehicle & business
Reduced tax on vehicle purchase or import. Business equipment also exempt within this window.
6 years
Personal use period
Items imported under exemption must remain in personal use in Israel. Selling earlier may trigger back taxes.
Work visa holders (B-1) — critical
Unlike almost every other country, Israel does not grant duty-free import rights to B-1 work visa holders. Instead, your employer must provide an original bank guarantee to Israeli Customs — signed by the issuing bank — covering the full customs duties on your shipment.

This guarantee must be renewed every year and can only be released once your goods are exported out of Israel. If your employer is unwilling or unable to provide it, your shipment will be held at the port and you will owe full duties before release.

Confirm this with your employer before you ship anything. Maya can help you understand exactly what documents your employer needs to provide.
Returning Israeli residents — not the same as Olim
Israeli citizens returning from abroad have two very different situations:

Less than 2 years abroad — no exemption at all. Your shipment will be taxed at full declared value including VAT and local sales tax from origin country.

More than 2 years abroad — you may qualify for "returning resident" status and a duty-free exemption, but your window is only 9 months from arrival — not 3 years like new Olim. You must apply for returning resident status online while in Israel before shipping. Visits during your time abroad must not have exceeded 120 days per year.
Can't use your exemption in time? You may qualify for an extension
IDF service — the clock pauses while you serve. It resumes when you finish.
Full-time students — if you start within 18 months of Aliyah, you get a 1-year extension after graduation.
Extended time abroad — if you spend more than 6 consecutive months outside Israel during your first 3 years, apply for an extension when you return.
Make the most of your exemption
Maya knows every document Israeli customs requires. She'll make sure your packing lists, declarations, and import permits are correct — so nothing is delayed or taxed unnecessarily at the port.

This guide is for general information only and does not constitute legal or customs advice. Regulations are subject to change. Always verify with the Israel Customs Authority or a qualified adviser before making shipping decisions. Last reviewed April 2026.

Our promise

Not a directory.
A guide who stays.

Most services match you with a professional and disappear. A lead provider sends your number to three shipping companies and calls it done. We built something different — a guide who stays in the conversation from your first question to the day your container is delivered and unpacked.

Built on seven years of hands-on Israel shipping experience. We know every step of this journey — because we've lived it from the inside. That's the knowledge Daniel carries with him, for every person he guides.
